According to the Financial Times, Volkswagen’s CEO, Herbert Diess, says the business is “essentially sold out on electric vehicles in Europe and the United States” for the year. This implies that anyone interested in an electric vehicle from VW, Audi, or any of the firm’s other brands may have to wait until 2023 as the company works to overcome a chip shortage and production challenges caused by COVID shutdowns in China.

VW anticipates its order backlog to continue to expand, according to the report. It now has a long waiting list for electric vehicles and hopes to add more throughout the year. However, supply chain concerns will make it tough to fill those positions. Due to a shortage of semiconductors, almost every automaker has had to suspend or slow manufacturing. Some people have gone so far as to remove features from their cars merely to get them off the assembly line. Electric automobiles also require a significant number of batteries, which can be difficult to produce even in the best of circumstances.
